A Residents forum to suggest methods and ideas to dissuade speeding motorists that use Carolyn JACKSON Drive and MORELLA Ave as a drag strip. When enough data is collected it will be collated and presented to levels of government. Our families have the right to live in a safe environment and have quiet enjoyment of our properties...this includes the roads that impact on our homes our safety and security. PLEASE POST A COMMENT
Bravo! This blog covers my exact concerns.
ReplyDeleteThe traffic calming island on CJD appears to work reasonably well -- traffic slows as it passes through the island from the south. However, traffic coming from the north seem to consider the road a slalem track and a test of the acceleration ability of their vehicle.
My preference would be for another traffic calming island (or similar) between Morella Drive and the existing island on CJD. At least one more of these is also required between the two existing roundabouts on Morella.
I'm not a keen supporter of speed bumps as they serve to slow the traffic too much - way below the quite reasonable limit of 50 kmh.
What additional support / action do you require?

Thanks for the post Will,
ReplyDeleteAt the moment the main thing you could assist with is to encourage your neighbours to post we need as many responses as possible to have any impact... feel free to call me to discuss any concerns or ideas you may have.
Cheers mate.
Matt
This issue was raised when Carolyn Jackson Drive was extended - we were promised speed humps, as yet nothing has happened. The police only need to set up speed camera's and they will make a fortune.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say good luck with getting the council to do anything.
Mate, I can ony try. I think our elected representatives have forgotten that they are public servants..for the people?
ReplyDeleteCheers
Matt
I was glad to receive your letter in the post.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts are that we need to setup a meeting with the Mayor of QBN Council and the local Police commander. We need to walk away with a short term action plan and a long term action plan.
I live right next to the "chicane" on CJD and daily watch cars from both directions accelerate and often hit the kerb.
The light pole out the front of my house was knocked over by a "P" plater 4 - 5 months back. Another driver smashed their car in to the kerb and left it in my front yard for a day. Recently I was overtaken by a crazed woman in the dark who felt that 50 wasn't fast enough.
I believe if the volume is solved, the speed is also solved for the longer term. Which suggests that traffic calming islands WITH speed humps are a necessary thing.
On the footpath front, I watch mothers rush their prams up past the chicane on CJD each day because there is no footpath. Given a majority of the development has been done, this is no longer acceptable.
Matt, I'll give you a call!
Wondering if you could extend to include the CJD end of Halloran drive. 2 Weeks ago we had a car plough through our front garden due to speed and alcohol. The garden was the only thing that stopped it coming through our bedroom window. We built the garden the way we did because we thought it was only a matter of time before someone comes over the small crest of the hill too quickly. I am preparing a letter to send to council to ask for some kind of traffic slowing things to be put in place (it wil be accompanied by photo's of the incident). I don't expect a great response from them, but we can add it to your pile of 'no action'.
ReplyDeleteSure, Im in the process of including HALLORAN in the BLOG, the JRA have emailed members details of this site I would suggest that some would reside on the street. I will amend the flyers that I sent out to CJD and MORELLA residents to include HALLORAN. Feel free to call me to discuss...
ReplyDeleteCheers

Hi Matt
ReplyDeleteI was pleased to get your ltr in the mail as I share your concerns. I am near the round-about connecting Morella to Carolyn Jackson. If I could I'd move. The moment they connected Nth Terrace with Jerra it created a thoroughway to avoid Layon Drive. Anyone in favour of blocking access from the two? Or more unsightly traffic islands. No speed bumps, the p-platers luv the thrill of bouncing over them. And I've had my garden lights swiped 3times! late night hooning but that's a separate blog. Thanks Matt.
Ann
Hi Ann,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments, both streets definitely get smashed with traffic and idiots, a CJD resident once said to me “ have a look at most of the drivers travelling up the street, they are either on the phone or picking their nose” Do your own survey and you will find that its true, unfortunately most nose pickers are doing 90 km/h and the IPHONE set drive like Helen KELLER on Amphetamines ... It’s only a matter of time before there is a tragedy, I love my son and as an older parent I am very protective, I flat out reject assertions that we can’t do something to protect him and all the other families in these streets... Please talk to your neighbours and ask them to post...
Thanks Ann
Matt
I'm in favour of blocking the streets off again. I have heard that the reason they won't do it is because there will only be one road in and out of Jerra in the event of a bushfire.
ReplyDeleteStill a valid option though. Its a large volume road with little vegetation around it.
I watched a Woolworths semi trailer travel through last night (again).
I have taken to flashing my headlights at speeding cars, they tend to think there is a policeman on the street and slow down. Rather sad really but seems to work.
Maybe we can all 'go slow' ? I'm tired of the whole thing.
I was pleased when I received your letter in the mail. FINALLY people are speaking out. I live on the hairpin corner on CJD, in-between the roundabout on Morella and the island on CJD - I see the madness everyday, and I'm SICK of it. It's got to the point that I almost hate living here. The speed these cars go around the corner, I agree one day there will be a death. Due to excessive speeds, quite often you'll see cars crossing to the wrong side of the road when they go around the corner. I've seen so many near misses - cars having to jump the curb just to get out of the way. I've been involved in near-misses just trying to get into/out of my drive way. I'm scared one day someone won’t be paying attention and will crash into me. One day there will be a head-on here. Last year we had a drunk driver 360' right out the front of our house crashing into our yard. Luckily he missed our house. That same night (I believe the same driver) crashed into the yard of a house on Morella. There is NO WAY I let our son play out the front of our house - there's no way of knowing what these crazy drivers are going to do. I'm waiting for the day we finally get a path. The brave soles who walk along the road - I don't know how they do it. I get nervous when I see school kids trying to cross the street to get to their bus/home, no-one seems to slow down. Anything to slow these people down has got to be a good thing. Thanks Matt it's a great thing your doing, I hope council will listen and something good will come of this before we see a fatality. RL.
ReplyDeleteHi Matt
ReplyDeleteYes, many cars definitely go too fast along our road. As well as the safety aspects already mentioned, the noise of these speeding accelerating cars is something that also bothers me. Otherwise our street is relatively peaceful.
I get concerned when I turn across CJD into our driveway, I'm always anxious there may be some tailgating speedster that might not notice I've slowed almost to a standstill and indicated to turn right. (It's not so bad if they've tailgated for a while because at least I know they are there, it's the ones that rapidly accelerate after the CJD chicane).
I had someone overtake me on that chicane last year i.e. they went round the other side of the island (heading towards Halloran Drive). I don't know how good the visibility would have been to see oncoming traffic..
My pick would be speed cameras. It works as a deterrent, they may even avoid our street, and revenue for whoever gets it is a bonus. I don't mind the chicanes, but speed bumps are a bit of a pain to have to slow down and bump over every day. And the 'hoons' make that most unpleasant noise when they accelerate after slowing down to go over them.
Good work Matt.

I appreciate that closing off Morella and CJD again could be a risk should a bushfire occur. However, it wouldn't need to be a permanent blockage. What are those gates called that the rangers open up to get into the reserve? It's like a big, steel boomgate thingy.
ReplyDeleteOn Saturday night I nearly jumped out of my skin when a car came screeching through the Morella/CJD roundabout and I was ready to hear a big BANG ! The thing is, if they loose control they could easily drive into my house. I personally dislike living where I am. I guess I'll just have to continue to put in those powerball tickets.
Ann
BTW I sent a written complaint to Woolworths about its semitrailer driving on our local streets. Didn't hear anything back but haven't seen the truck since.....here's hoping.
ReplyDeleteWhen the speedsters are commercial vehicles I copy down the business names and numbers and ring their offices to complain.
I believe there is going to be a major accident on the strip of road betwwen the CJD/Morella roundabout and the CJD chicane. There are 2 essentially blind corners and the speedsters seem to like that strip of road as a racetrack.
My question is how do we demand council do something about it...apart from have a working bee overnight and build speedbumps ourselves?...that would sure surprise the 'peak hour' traffic.
CJD resident
Thanks to all that have posted and have continued to post with updates and information that is pertinent to these streets. I have recently been In contact with some residents from HALLORAN Drive, not surprisingly HALLORAN residents experience similar problems as the residents of CJD and MORRELLA do.
ReplyDeleteI hope to have flyers delivered to HALLORAN residents between LIMESTONE and CJD... Please continue to report motorists to QUEANBEYAN Police also if you can Identify company or corporate logos on vehicles (+ licence plate) report driver behaviour to their employers ( good call on the WOOLWORTHS truck) there is always a burden of proof, however even if the driver receives a warning from the Boss, that’s half the job done..
As far as the Council is concerned I will meet them as soon as there is REPRESENTATIVE data ( we need more residents to post), seek media involvement, local member etc... Someone will listen, particularly when it affects their re election chances. The more people post the more pressure we can bring to bear.
Cool idea about the Midnight SPEED BUMPS... I don't think I would like an extended stay in the watch house though.
Cheers
Matt
To those concerned about the Woolworths semis travelling through our suburban street. I have received an email ( 2 in fact) from the Albury base ( where the trucks are coming from). They are concerned this is happening and would like details of dates and rego numbers if possible on the offending trucks. They have a GPS tracker on all their vehicles and will stop trucks using the 'short cut'. Funny isn't it...Woolies care more about our safety and amenity than the Council does!
ReplyDelete...so if you see the Wooies semi take down the time and contact john_hall@toll.com.au with the details.
We were very relieved to recieve your letter in the mail. Being new residents to the area, it didn't take long to hear the late night screeching that occurs every second night at least. We are always waiting for the 'bang' and worry about a car crashing into our house, as we live on a bend. We have a young toddler and another on the way and would never even think of letting them play out the front. Such a shame to have to worry about this in such a beautiful location. We like the idea of blocking off Morella, as speed bumps are unsightly and slow down the traffic (or they don't seem to stop some people) Well done Matt, we can only hope that the council will listen and start focusing their attention on important matters. Our concern is that it will take a tragedy, even death, before something is done.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how many residents had the pleasure of staying home over Easter and experience the ongoing flow of speeding drivers (particularly "p" plate drivers) along Morella and CJD -but I certainly did!! Being tailgated, witnessing drivers overtake a turning vehicle in a dangerous manner and use the road as a speedway instead of a local street is certainly becoming very tedious - not too mention annoying. I'm actually feeling ripped off...I pay my land rates but I don't get to enjoy my property to its fullest, (particularly the front garden) because its just too risky to be out there due to the speed some people travel. Not to mention the noise level!
