Stop the speedway

Dear residents of Carolyn Jackson Drive and Morella Avenue.

The increased volume of traffic using Carolyn Jackson Drive and Morella Avenue is of concern, but of greater concern is the significant speed travelled by some users of these roads.

Although the speed limit is 50 km, it appears many motorists disregard this limit.

If something isn’t done regarding this problem soon there is significant risk that property will be damaged, wildlife and pets will be killed and worse , your family and friends could be seriously injured or KILLED. Just walking along the footpath is of concern with the speed some people travel. There was recently an incident on Halloran Drive where a speeding drunk driver jumped the curb and crashed into the front garden of a home. If it wasn’t for the garden retaining wall, who knows what the outcome would have been for those residents.

Safety and security concerns aside, this type of activity significantly LOWERS THE VALUE OF YOUR PROPERTY

It’s time for the residents of these Jerrabomberra streets to take action.

If you are interested in trying to resolve these concerns please register your details on this blog and I will prepare a submission for our Government representative and Queanbeyan Council to address.

Any suggestions you may have on how the Council/Government should resolve this problem would also be welcome.

  1. Matthew,

I applaud your actions on trying to get something done. I seem to remember a meeting at the Queanbeyan Bi Centennial Hall approx 2 years ago when the then mayor Mr Pangalo showed very impressive plans and submissions regarding traffic calming measures which "had been budgeted for and the money was there and would go ahead". Alas, as we who are but mere rate payers know, promises are for getting re elected not for actually doing. I personally have lost a dog and cat to the Morella drag strip and had another dog hit but luckily survive so I would be happy to provide any support for this cause.

  2. Thanks for the support Ian,

I will take this to the wire, I've had enough, I have come very close to totally losing it with some idiots who use this street and I am afraid that at some stage my anger will get the better of me, so I guess this approach will allow me to stay in my job and out of jail, please talk to your neighbours and encourage them to post comments...The more responses we get the more pressure I can exert.

    Thanks Mate

  3. I agree with both of you. I am sick of being tailgated every day. Every time I turn into my driveway I nearly get rear ended by idiots sitting in my boot. They then have the hide to sound their horn as if I am at fault. I have personally seen many close calls as cars zoom around me into the oncoming traffic ( usually speeding as well). Down on Morella ( we all know the spot) I am overtaken regularly just before a blind corner.
There is very little police presence and one day it will be a child killed trying to cross the road.
I too remember seeing the great traffic calming plans ( including speed bumps on Morella ) but nothing has come to fruition.
As for the drunks from the Jerra Pub ..breaking bottles along the road on their exit from Jerrabomberra.....that is a whole other story.
I hope others feel motivated to post on this site so we can collectively get something done.
    Cheers

  5. Hi Matthew,

    Here here to your efforts!

We are so sick of not being able to sit in our living room and watch TV with the front door open due to the noise of hooners - it's not funny. Everytime we are pulled over for breath tests in and around Jerra we always mention to the police they are welcome to sit in our drive way and catch the hooners on any given evening... but still nothing... If they want to raise council revenue our drive way is open to them - we'll provide the tea and coffee.

We support you 900% and if we can help the cause in any way we will.

On several ocassions we have had our wheely bins (or our neigbours) knocked over by drunk drivers mounting the curb returning from the pub at all hours. Now we have to put our bins out of a morning. You are right when you say it is only a matter of time before a vehicle ploughs through someones living room wall. I only hope my 1 year old is not playing in there when it happens.

The tailgaters that sit right behind us as we are trying to pull in our driveway are just as bad. Lucky we only rent here - we have vowed and declared we would never buy a property in a street like this with small children it is a death trap.

Let us know how we can help while we live here.

  6. Hi TAM,

Thanks for the post, It’s a shame the road is the way it is, we love our home and we have world class neighbours. Unfortunately Police have limited resources and rely on intelligence with regard to Speed hot spots, that’s why we need to consistently report motorists who are clearly speeding, tailgating or not in proper control of their vehicle. We too have a young child and I am so damn scared and increasingly paranoid that he will somehow get away from me and end up on or near the road. I’m starting to feel like a member of the STAZI, I don’t like to “dob” but I will do whatever it takes to protect my family...

If you could persuade your neighbours to post that would be great...

    Cheers

  7. Monday night a car crashed in to the chicane on CJD at 5am. It must've been going quite fast because it folded up its front left wheel.

  9. Thanks for the Info Ben, It's curious that the counsellor has not elected to post on this topic considering he is a CJD resident, everyone in CJD and MORELLA received a FLYER, maybe I will put another one in his mail box just in case he inadvertently over looked it.

  10. Wednesday 11 March from 7.30am...police with speed camera on Morella. Plenty of customers... wonder if we can find out just how many people were caught. Hope the lady in the dark blue Audi was pinged as she travels our street every day at breakneck speed. Let's hope there are more cameras in the evening around 5.30pm.

  11. That is great news about the speed camera! I am tired of the white hotted up commodore (lowered, P plates and noisey) that drives along the street twice a day. I haven't managed to catch their license plate yet.

  12. Hi Matt

First I want to thank you for trying to be proactive about this issue. I apologise for not responding to you earlier, but I had a little trouble at first finding this site (and with two little girls, got a little sidetracked!). You are not alone in trying to have something done about this issue. I wrote to council about the problems we have here over 2 years ago, more from the perspective that I strongly believe this suburb is too large to simply have two entry and exit points. I was informed then that the extension of the Edwin Land Parkway to Cooma Road was council's "number one priority". I do believe the extension into Queanbeyan will help our street significantly as, let's face it, most people are using our street as a highway to reach Queanbeyan. It's not a perfect solution, but it will help. I do know, though, that according to an article from the Mayor in a recent JRA newsletter, this extension is not expected to be finished until 2010 - so another year of madness. I think a couple more traffic calming islands would also be a good idea. If people have to slow down to get somewhere, they are less likely to take that route. Not so keen on the idea of speed bumps though, cars clunking over them all time could be annoying. I know that our neighbours down the road - Tim and Louise took a petition signed by a significant number of residents to council around that time calling for traffic calming, but obviously to no avail.
I find it interesting, also, that the so called Jerromberra Residents Association are virtually silent on this issue. Their newsletter always features any issue on aircraft noise, or vandalism issues, which are also very important, but they seem to be oblivious or indifferent to the fact that a significant number of Jerrabomberra Heights residents now live on a highway. If you look back at their past newsletters there's virtually no mention of this issue. This is why I ceased being a member. I personally think they should rename themselves "Jerrabomberra Residents of "the Park" Association" - as this is obviously where they all live.
I have a feeling we live pretty close to each other - across the road in fact. I am hoping that one day our street can return somewhat to the pretty, family friendly street it once was. If I can in any way contribute to that outcome, I'd be happy to. Thanks again for your efforts.
    Karen
